Discover how coalition-building, capacity-building and community organizing have led to successful SRTS work in Chicago. Presenters will share how they’ve created synergy around the common goals of promoting violence prevention and physical activity and established coalitions to support SRTS. In the second part of the session, attendees will head outside the Convention Center to experience how the Consortium’s Neighborhood Walkability Assessment Tool can be used as a resource for creating change in the environment surrounding the school. Please wear comfortable walking shoes.

10 Design Solutions to Increase Cycling and Safety

Bring your own bike or use a bike from the Twin Cities’ Nice Ride bike sharing program to check out state-of-the-art bike facilities largely funded and implemented through the Non-motorized Transportation Pilot Project. While riding a six-mile loop, experience and hear explanations of on-street bike lanes, bicycle boulevards, advisory bike lanes, bike boxes and other innovative, low-cost design solutions. Please wear comfortable attire for bicycling.

Bring your own bike or use a bike from the Twin Cities’ Nice Ride bike sharing program to ride along with bike officers who are working to forge bonds with at-risk kids over the summer. The officers aim to establish a relationship that continues when they head back to school as School Resource Officers. With the help of private donations, they hand out bike helmets and offer those “caught’ wearing a helmet a chance to win a new bike. Bike to the engagement zone, observe interactions with students and hear a presentation from the officers who developed the program. Please wear comfortable attire for bicycling a total of approximately eight miles.

Experience a Bicycle Pedestrian Rodeo and gain firsthand knowledge about the skills and drills recommended for successful bike and pedestrian education. Certified bicycle instructors will share information and answer questions at stations covering basic bicycle safety checks, bicycle handling skills, a pedestrian street crossing game, and helmet use encouragement and fittings. Workshop will be held outside the Convention Center in a parking lot area; bikes will be provided. Please wear comfortable attire for bicycling.

Please note: This mobile workshop will be repeated twice within this time period. Once at 2 p.m. and once at 3:30 p.m. Please only sign up for one of them. The capacity of this mobile workshop is 30 participants for each session.

Assessing Walkability for Users of all Ages and Abilities

Join us in a “walkshop” to gain an understanding and appreciation of the complex needs of diverse audiences in the design and operation of walkable communities. Explore how the built environment can enhance not only the mobility of children, but also aging senior populations and those with disabilities. Discover resources and guidance to consider how transportation design impacts those with mobility limitations due to physical, cognitive, visual or auditory impairment. Workshop will be held outside the Convention Center area and will be walkable; please wear comfortable walking shoes.

Using VideoVoice with High School Youth For Equitable and Healthy Transportation Engagement and Planning

Explore VideoVoice — a technique for community members to provide their unique perspectives by collecting video data on existing health and safety conditions, as well as desired outcomes. Hear about the process, outcomes and replicability of a unique partnership involving high school-aged youth, educators and California WALKS that has used VideoVoice to bring youth concerns, priorities and strategies into the dialogue. Workshop will start inside and then continue outside the Convention Center where participants will be able to practice VideoVoice. Please wear comfortable walking shoes.

Urban Corridors - Creating Opportunities, Connecting Partners

Bring your own bike or use a bike from the Twin Cities’ Nice Ride bike sharing program to join us as we head to the Midtown Greenway and discover the youth opportunities it has brought to area schools. Ride from downtown to Jefferson Elementary, a school with a bicycle mechanics club that has also used the Greenway for nearby bicycle fieldtrips. Other stops may include Anderson School, which walks with students over to the Greenway in the summer, and the Midtown Greenway Coalition, which uses a bicycle fleet provided by the Bikes Belong Coalition to offer bicycle rides to youth groups in the area along the Greenway. Please wear comfortable attire for bicycling.

Sibley Bike Depot: From Fix-A-Flat to Building Youth Advocates for Bicycling

Sibley Bike Depot Youth Apprentices, with support from Micah Thompson, Youth Coordinator, and Jason Tanzman, Development and Outreach Coordinator, Minnesota

Meet at Minneapolis Convention Center 2^nd Ave. S entrance near the SRTS bike racks to load into vans

Take a van shuttle to St. Paul’s nonprofit, community Sibley Bike Depot. Sibley youth apprentices will lead a hands-on demo showing how to fix a flat bicycle tire. Participants will also get a tour and overview of the depot and its unique programs. The depot empowers communities by having staff teach people for free to fix their own bicycle. Programs include volunteering 20 hours to earn a bike for free, loaning out a bicycle to a community member for six months, and a youth apprenticeship program.

Please note: This mobile workshop will be repeated twice within this time period. Once at 8:30 a.m. and once at 9:45 a.m. Please only sign up for one of them. Vans will be transporting to the Sibley Bike Depot. The capacity of this mobile workshop is 20 participants for each session.
